Dr. Groenewald is Director of Pediatric Anesthesiology Research at Stanford University School of Medicine. He conducts clinical research that crosses several areas related to child health, including epidemiology, health services research, pediatric pain, sleep deficiency, and opioid use behaviors. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, International Association for the Study of Pain, and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesiology. His work on pediatric pain, sleep disturbance, and opioid use has been published in JAMA Pediatrics, Pediatrics, PAIN, Journal of Pain, SLEEP, and JAMA Psychiatry. Dr. Groenewald holds national leadership positions in the United States Association for the Study of Pain, including being elected as inaugural Chair of the Pediatric Special Interest Group in 2020 and co-chair of the Advocacy committee in 2022. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Pain and Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Leo is a Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a highly motivated recent US MD graduate with a strong aspiration for an academic career. In the Groenewald Lab, Leo is conducting full-time research in the domains of pediatric perioperative pain and opioid use behaviors and seeks to develop clinical research skills needed to translate research findings into clinical practice. As a postdoctoral research fellow, he will be exposed to longitudinal observational, interventional, qualitative research designs, and a wide range of methodologies including psychosocial assessment & intervention, clinical trials, and digital health.

Rebecca Flack is a Clinical Research Coordinator Associate in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She attended Swarthmore College where she pursued her interest in medicine from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the Groenewald and Rabbitts Labs, Rebecca supports research projects that investigate the relationship between sleep and opioid use in adolescents. In the future, she hopes to attend medical school and contribute to identifying interdisciplinary solutions to healthcare issues faced by youth globally.

Zoe Peach-Riley is a Clinical Research Coordinator Assistant in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She attended the University of Southern California, where she studied Intelligence & Cyber-Operations. Her childhood interest in medicine re-emerged after graduating, which led her to attend the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program at Bryn Mawr College. In the future, Zoe plans to attend medical school, with a specific interest in caring for young athletes.

Ana Carney is a Clinical Research Coordinator Associate in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She attended Swarthmore College where she obtained a major in Neuroscience and a minor in Spanish. In the Groenewald and Rabbitts Labs, Ana supports research investigating the relationship between sleep, surgery recovery and opioid use in adolescents. She is assisting in the translation of research material into Spanish and serves as the primary contact for Spanish-speaking participants. In the future, she plans to attend medical school and provide care to youth suffering from neurological conditions, particularly underserved Spanish-speaking populations.

Ryan Ma is a Clinical Research Coordinator Associate in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He attended Pomona College and majored in Neuroscience and minored in Asian American Studies, where he explored the intersection of health and minority identities to understand how various factors influence and characterize people’s lived experiences. Ryan works in the outpatient pediatric pain management clinic, the Biobehavioral Pediatric Pain lab, and the Rabbitts/Groenewald Labs to help support various studies. He plans to pursue a career in healthcare as a physician, seeking to provide care with cultural humility and uplifting the voices of marginalized populations.
